In the last 6 months or so, I decided to really focus on my fitness and get back into shape. Actually, it’s something I have tried to do periodically since high school. I’ve tried everything in the book, from weight lifting to running to P90x. I have had varying results but nothing to my satisfaction. So about a year and a half ago I joined my local CrossFit gym. I would go once or twice a week and again the results were okay.
Then one day I was chatting with one of the coaches and he started talking about excuses. Excuses like “I’m too tired” or “I don’t have enough time.” We talked about how excuses are just a way for your brain to let yourself off the hook. As a busy plastic surgeon with two children and a wife who is also a surgeon, I had used these excuses for many years and felt justified in using them. Certainly no one is busier than I am, I thought.
At that point something clicked and I decided to dedicate myself to restoring my fitness. That was six months ago and now I’ve lost about 25 pounds and am in the best shape of my life. It wasn’t easy and took a lot of hard work. However, what is truly different than my other attempts at losing weight is my attitude towards the entire process. Whenever I’m tired or feel like I don’t have enough time I just remind myself that these are excuses to allow myself off the hook. Excuses are a game that your brain plays to make it okay not to try, or live with the status quo, or make it okay to fail.
I bring up excuses because I had the same issues with hair transplant when I was thinking of getting one. It will hurt or it’s too expensive were the usual suspects. But in the end, like with my fitness, these excuses were just a way to allow me to continue to live with losing my hair and not do anything about it. I’m sure these excuses sound familiar to all of you. The truth is that the hair transplant did hurt a little and it can be expensive. But in the end the results were worth the minor pain and cost. I am so happy that I was able to overcome the excuses to reach a goal I was so despite to achieve, a full head of hair.
So what’s your excuse?
